I am asked all the time, “What exercises are off limits for older clients?”

My first response is always... How do you define older? Is someone that is 54 with multiple joint replacements and back surgeries older? Or someone that is 70 with zero injuries, no surgeries and very high fitness level older?
Older really isn't the right question to begin with in my opinion. The more appropriate question would be, what exercises are off limits for certain functional limitations?
I don't believe too many exercises are off limits; they simply become more risky for people with lower functional ability.
At almost every conference, people are shocked that I have older clients do push-ups on the floor or plank up-downs on the floor, but then when they see the video I think they realize what they imagine an 82 year old can do might be skewed by their experience with frail 80 year olds vs robust 80 year olds.
You see, some clients at 52 might not be able to do plank up-downs, but that cannot influence my decision to choose them for Gunther at 82. Check out the videos I filmed with him working out.
